Among film photographers, Portra 400 is arguably one of the most praised color-negative film stocks- especially for portraits because of the way this film roll captures fine skin details.

120 Medium format

If you’re shooting 120 rolls you can save money buying medium format rolls on B&H or Amazon.

Kodak’s Portra 400 comes with a price and you pay for quality. 

Cost of shooting Portra 400 35mm rolls

You’ll usually find one roll of 35mm Portra 400 at around 9$ per roll.

This makes the cost of shooting Portra 400 35mm around 1 dollar per 4th photo you take.

Cost of shooting Kodak Portra 400, 120 rolls (Medium Format)

If you shoot medium format the prices per exposure doubles because you will only get 15-16 exposures out of one roll.

So you are looking at a cost per exposure of around 0.4 dollars. 1 dollar for every second exposure. This will surely help you photograph with intention 🙂

What about the Kodak Color Plus 200?

Kodak Color Plus is famously known as ‘The Poor Man’s Portra 400’ and for good reasons and a great alternative to Kodak Portra 400.

If you compared Portra 400 to Kodak Colors Plus 200, you’ll find that it’s around 2.5 times cheaper than the Portra 400.

Whether the Portra 400 is the best Color Negative 35mm Film Stock, is very subjective. It’s around 2.5 times more than the Kodak Color Plus 200, so I guess it depends on your budget.
